{Spotlight & Excerpt} In The Band by Jean Haus

In The Band
by Jean Haus
New Adult
Pages: 306
Available as of October 19, 2012
Amazon | Barnes & Noble

When family problems push Riley Middleton into giving up a percussion scholarship in another state and attending college from home, her friends push her to try out for a local rock band. Of course, Riley makes the band. She rules at the drums.

Riley soon finds out rock bands have a different dynamic than marching bands, especially when each of her male band mates has a major ego and is a major player. Two of them relentlessly flirt with her. The other—a dark, sexy rock god she can’t help being attracted to— is a total jerk and pushes her to quit. She becomes determined to ignore his rudeness and his hotness. Even if she was interested in jerks, a hook up would probably get her booted out of the ego-ridden band, and playing keeps her sane. Behind the drums, the world and its troubles evaporate.

If she wants to stay in the band, Riley needs to ignore the growing sparks between her and her band enemy. But as she gets to know the man behind the stage persona, ignoring him proves to be more difficult than flowing through a time sig shift.

*New Adult/Mature YA for language and sexual situations.

     “We’re going to get started.”
I look up to find the guitar player standing in front of Marcus. He’s wearing a dark t-shirt and jeans. Nothing that screams hot. But he somehow does with that angle of hair across his face, the muscles noticeable under his shirt, and those full lips. My heart rate matches the jerking rhythm of my nerves. The guitarist nods toward me but his dark eyes stay on Marcus. “Sorry but your girlfriend can’t stay.”
Ah, bingo. He does think I’m a groupie.
Marcus grins and pulls me closer until the side of my face is smashed against the Pinterest across his chest. “She’s trying out, not me.”
An eyebrow arches. Otherwise, the angles of his face remain stoic. “Then I guess you need to leave."
“Come on,” Marcus says. “I know Justin.”
His placid expression doesn’t change. “I don’t give a shit if you’re his long lost brother.”
Marcus’s lips form a tight line as the guitar player stares him down. Luckily, the singer comes over and gives Marcus a fist pump. “Dude, you trying out?”
“I wish. But no.” He turns to me, smiling wide. “Justin, this is Riley.”
Justin looks me up and down. His gaze pauses two seconds too long on my cleavage. "You play?"
Marcus laughs. “She was supposed to play at—”
I nudge him in the ribs and nod.
“Cool.” Justin grins and dimples groove his cheeks. “We’ve never had anyone so hot audition before."
The guitar player’s eyes roll. “We’ve never had a girl audition so who exactly are you referring to?"
Justin’s dimples disappear as he scowls at his band mate before looking back to me. “We’re waiting for at least one more guy, but we’re going to start without him.”
The guitar player nails me with a narrowed look and crosses his arms over his plain t-shirt. “Why don’t you go first, Riley?” His tone is smooth but I catch the undertone of sarcasm in his voice. He doesn’t think I can play. Because I’m a girl?

{Spotlight & Top 5} Trapped by Ella James

Trapped
by Ella James
Series: Here Trilogy (#2)
Pages:  210

CONTAINS SPOILERS - DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ HERE.
When Milo Mitchell falls for the beautiful, tuxedo-clad guy she found wandering her family's rural Colorado property, she never dreamed he was a scout from another galaxy, or that their relationship would leave him with an impossible choice: eradicating humankind, or initiating the end of his own people.

Nick's job is finding the elements his people need to power their elaborate interweb of minds. Being a scout means he is capable of traveling to other planets on his own. It also means that, unlike The Rest, he has access to primitive feelings and individual desires. For eons, he was part of the whole, but when he encountered Milo, his obsession with her changed everything.

Nick's partner, Vera, is capable of independent thought, but not compelled by it. She is satisfied with her existence as one of The Rest, and she won't agree that humans are worth sparing; not when their planet has a precious cache of the gold her people need so badly.

While Vera tries to force Nick into endorsing an Earth invasion, working behind the scenes to tie his hands, and the Department of Defense lays a trap for them with Milo's mom as bait, Nick and Milo are waging their own war - against a primal desire that can only lead to one thing: heartbreak.

Five Books I Wish Were Mine by Ella
1. The Only Alien on the Planet by Kristen D. Randle ~ Because Kristen D. Randle wrote a lovely, sad, sweet, heartfelt YA story before YA was the coolest thing on the block, and when I read it in 8th grade, I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up.

2. The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay ~ Because Nastya is one of my favorite YA heroines EVER. Because the characters don't just seem real; they are realer than my grandmother. Because I STILL miss Josh, and I finished this book more than a month ago. Because I think I'll need to read it at least two more times this year, and my lifetime re-read list only includes about four books.

3. Hopeless by Colleen Hoover ~ Because just when I was really sad I'd finished SoT, Colleen Hoover put out Hopeless. As an author who critiques books more than I enjoy them, the best way I can sum up this book is masterful. *THIS* is YA romance at its best.

4. Across The Universe by Beth Revis ~ Because the plot, the character, and the worldbuilding are through-the-roof awesome, and spec fiction is my crack. Also, because Beth Revis writes some of the best plot twists I've read in years. Spaceship + romance + secrets = awesome.

5. Almost by Anne Eliot ~ Because her characters are sensitive, honest, and real, and her writing is just plain fun to read. Also, I'm a sucker for stories about hardship and healing. This is one of them. Bonus: It's also a really sweet romance.

Ella James is the author of Stained and Stolen, books one and two in the Stained Series; HERE, book one in a sci-fi romance trilogy; and Before You Go, a romance YA beach read that tells the first meeting of Logan and Margo, who will be featured in her upcoming adult release, Over The Moon. She has a YA paranormal romance release scheduled for every month of 2012, including Chosen (Stained Book Three) in June and the second HERE book in July.

{Spotlight} Always Me by Kelly Riad

Always Me
by Kelly Riad
Pages:  426
Available as of August 31, 2011
Amazon

Nicky’s life is privileged and sheltered, but has never felt like her own. Her body’s marked by a scar that no one, not even her parents, has been able to explain. She’s haunted by nightmares and hallucinations of violent scenes that feel more like the memories of a very troubled soul than the typical dreams of a seventeen-year old girl. From blood-painted basements to cold guillotines and dark forests, these visions are taking their toll on her sanity.

When she first meets Xander in class, she sees him bleeding from a gaping wound in his neck. His shirt soaked red, he laughs while she trembles and messes up her class recitation. After the vision passes, she’s left with a burning hatred for him and an irrational fear that he’s a threat to her life. But soon, that relents to wary curiosity and suspicion. Xander knows more about her than he should. And when she sees the scar on his neck—just like hers and in the same spot she had seen gushing blood in her vision—she knows it’s not just coincidence.

Kelly Riad is an American writer who graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas with a degree in journalism. Because's she's always been a lucky little brat, her life has taken her all over the world from the hot, humid streets of Hong Kong and the crowded markets of Cairo, to the cobbles of Vienna and the ruins of Rome from where she has shamelessly stolen ideas and material for her stories.

She self-published her first young adult novel, Always Me, in September 2011. Other Novels include Return to Arèthane and Prince of Arèthane.

{Spotlight, Excerpt & Giveaway} Defy the Stars by Stephanie Parent

Defy the Stars
by Stephanie Parent
Self Published
Available as of July 30, 2012
Amazon

Julia Cape: A dedicated classical piano student just trying to get through her last semester of high school while waiting to hear from music conservatories.

Reed MacAllister: A slacker more likely to be found by the stoners’ tree than in class.

Julia and Reed might have graduated high school without ever speaking to each other…until, during a class discussion of Romeo and Juliet, Julia scoffs at the play’s theme of love at first sight, and Reed responds by arguing that feelings don’t always have to make sense. Julia tries to shake off Reed’s comment and forget about this boy who hangs with the stoner crowd—and who happens to have breathtaking blue eyes—but fate seems to bring the two together again and again. After they share an impulsive, passionate kiss, neither one can deny the chemistry between them. Yet as Julia gets closer to Reed, she also finds herself drawn into his dark world of drugs and violence. Then a horrific tragedy forces Julia’s and Reed’s families even farther apart…and Julia must decide whether she’s willing to give up everything for love.

Defy the Stars is written in an edgy free-verse style that will appeal to fans of Ellen Hopkins and Lisa Schroeder; however, the writing is accessible enough to speak to non-verse fans as well. The novel’s combination of steamy romance and raw emotion will appeal to fans of Gayle Forman, Simone Elkeles, Jennifer Echols, and Tammara Webber. With a story, language and form that both pay homage to and subvert Shakespeare’s play, Defy the Stars is much more than just another Romeo and Juliet story.

About the Author:
Stephanie Parent is a YA author repped by Brenda Bowen of Sanford J. Greenburger Associates. She is a graduate of the Master of Professional Writing program at USC and attended the Baltimore School for the Arts as a piano major.

Excerpt:

Reed pulls me down the alley, away from the
hotel, till we land in a tight space between two
neighboring buildings. The others aren’t so quick,
or lucky, and a moment later I hear my father
yelling:

“What the hell are you hoodlums
doing here?”

(Hoodlums. Do I know my dad or what?)

He stops, apparently sniffing,
since he quickly adds,

“Are you all high? Get out of here,
or I’ll call…”

Just then, a shaft of moonlight falls on Reed’s
face, and my father’s voice tumbles away to
nothing.

His railing’s just a buzz of white
noise now, senseless as the cold wind
rolling through the night.

I can’t look away from Reed’s eyes.

Yes, they’re blue, like Perry’s, but
as different from his as…well, as
night from day.

Perry’s are too bright, offensive,
garish, like the sky at high noon.
And when he’s looking at you, there’s
that sense he just wants something.

But Reed? Reed’s eyes are full of
clouds, of smoke, and the hint of
something else beneath them, too fragile
for the light.

I could dive in and find it.

But I’m staring, so I tear my gaze away,
embarrassed.

“Julia?” he whispers.
“Are you okay?
Have you been crying?”

So maybe he was staring too.

“Oh, no…I mean, maybe a little.
But I’m okay now.”

“What happened?”

“Just, um, I was here
with Perry, and…
He got kind of grabby.”

Why am I telling him this?
I clamp my mouth shut and
shiver. My anger has seeped
away into the night, and with it,
the layer of tension that buffered
me from the cold.

“He didn’t hurt you, did he?” Reed
bristles—

—and it surprises me.
I shiver harder.

“No, no—I’m fine.”

Then I guess he notices
my shaking arms, ’cause he says,

“You must be freezing!”

And before I can protest, his
leather jacket is sheltering me.

Beneath it, he wears only a T-shirt,
his bare arms lean but sinewy,
just like in my—
—Stop it!

I try to shake myself sane again,
tune back in to the world around me.
I realize it’s dead

quiet.

“Guess my dad scared your
friends away.” I still whisper,
for some reason.

“Don’t worry.” Reed grins.
“They can take care of
themselves.”

And apparently, I’m not so successful
at holding on to sanity, because I look
at his lips and think:

Maybe fate gave me a second

first chance tonight.

I don’t believe in fate,
or in acting on impulse,
but my body doesn’t seem to care
as it draws me closer to Reed
till our lips are
touching.

He stiffens for a moment,
his lips slack beneath mine,
and I know I’ve just made
a terrible mistake…

Then his arms are around me,
pulling me closer, his lips opening,
demanding, and there’s no question
anymore:

He’s kissing me.

And it’s nothing—nothing—
nothing like the disaster earlier
tonight.

This is

warmth all around me.
a new world opening.
two stars colliding.
And I think
I’m drowning.

{Spotlight} 90 Cats and No Litter Box in Sight by Molly Zenk

90 Cats and No Litter Box in Sight
by Molly Zenk
Pages: 251
Available as of June 1, 2012 in ebook
Amazon | Barnes & Noble

They're perfect for each other…even if she doesn't know it yet.

Glynis Kirby's love life stinks. Her boyfriend dumped her for another guy. Her next-door-neighbor held her hostage on prom night. And now she's been trapped in a Porta-Potty by a monkey with a switchblade. And she's not even going to talk about her date with the poly sci major with the Pocket Ouiji Board. Maybe she really is desperate enough to take everyone's advice--including her mother's (ugh!)--and date the dashing Daniel Bond.

Corin Lancashire runs the popular blog site mydreamgirl.com where he chronicles his less than stellar attempts to get noticed by his dream girl, Glynis Kirby. After taking the "all girls think stripteases are hot" advice from a reader, and discovering that "all girls but Glynis think stripteases are hot," Corin disables the comments feature on his blog and takes matters into his own hands to build a friendship-crawling-toward-relationship with his dream girl. But competing with the charming, suave, and well-dressed Daniel is a hazard Corin didn't anticipate, and neither is the information he digs up on Daniel that could threaten Glynis's life…

EXCERPT:
Corin grabs my arm and spins me around to face him before I'm safe in the halls of the Math Department. Not many guys will follow you in there. It's like a Geek Den where everyone is too wrapped up in their research and books and whiteboards to think to ask a girl out on a date and I'm pretty sure that's what Corin was planning to do before the stripping and the singing.
“Who put you up to this?” I demand. “Who? Was it Kathy? My mom? Who put you up to this?”
“No one,” Corin protests. “No one put me up to anything. I just... I just needed a way to get your attention. I could tell you were about to leave so I... I'm not like this normally, I swear,” he adds. “It's just, well, uh... It's just that I thought of so many things to say to you and when the time came to actually say them, I blanked out and did the first thing I could think of. You don't need to Baker Act me or anything. I'm really just a shy guy.”
“Shy guys don't strip in public.”
“They do when they take really bad advice from people on the Internet.” Corin runs a hand through his Doctor McDreamy hair before raising his pale eyebrows and giving me McDreamy eyes to go along with his McDreamy hair. “You're probably not going to believe this, Glynis, but I'm not a freak or a stalker. I'm completely harmless. Really.”
“You have yet to convince me of that, Crazy Bus Boy.”
“Does that mean I get another shot?” He perks up at the thought. “You can call me whatever nick-names you want—good or bad—just give me another shot. I'll be boringly normal from here on out. I promise.”
I take an unconscious step closer to Corin as he's talking because, the strangest thing happens as I'm looking up at his bright, hopeful face and coaxing smile. I feel safe. For the first time in almost a year, I feel safe.
“Get off the bus tomorrow at my stop and you'll have that shot.”
What's the harm in giving the guy a little crumb of hope? Maybe if he has hope, so will I.
