     I couldn’t find a good radio station, so I picked up my phone and put it on speaker, setting it in a little clip on my dashboard. I should have one of those headsets, but I thought they made people look like assholes, so I’d never gotten one.

     He picked up on the second ring.

     “Hey, I’m driving back and I just thought I would check in with my friend. How are you, friend?”

     He sounded like he was in a room full of people.

     “I’m good, friend. How are you?” The voices faded, as if he was walking away from them.

     “You’re not in class, are you?”

     “No, I was just getting something to eat.”

     “When’s your next class?”

     “Not for a while. I’m all yours, friend.”

     “Well that is good to hear, friend.”

     He went on to tell me about all the things that I’d missed on campus, from someone getting thrown out for setting a couch on fire, to the frat that was on probation, to the professor who’d gotten caught smoking pot on campus with a few students.

     It was all silly and mundane and distracting enough that I could get out of my own head for a few minutes. It was a blessed relief.

     He also filled me in on the crew. Lottie was dying to have me back and had stocked up on ice cream in preparation for lots of Law and Order marathons.

     Trish had almost gotten fired from her job for mouthing off to her boss, Will and Audrey had finally kissed in public and Simon was trying to convince everyone to participate in some sort of charity event that involved running around campus in your underwear.

     “I’m not freezing my junk off, even if it is for charity,” he said as I pictured his junk. It was pretty nice junk, and I wouldn’t like it if anything happened to it, even if I wasn’t going to be using it anytime soon. 

     It was all well and good to call ourselves friends over the phone, but in person, I had no idea how it was going to go.

     “How’s your mom?”

     “I guess she’s as good as can be expected. She goes from sobbing to cleaning like the Queen is coming over, then back to sobbing. I’m going back this weekend so Kayla can have a break.”

     “Do you feel guilty?” Stryker always had a way of asking the questions I didn’t want to answer.

     “Yeah. How can I not?”

     I waited for him to tell me that I shouldn’t, but he sighed.

     “You’re right.”

     “Wait, what was that?”

     He laughed.

     “I said that you’re right. A little guilt is okay. It’s the big, soul-crushing guilt I’m worried about.”

     Grabbing my cup, I forgot myself and indulged in a sip.
     Luca watched me, his gaze hard.
     Note to self: brown tea + white shirt + GQ model = bad idea. I placed my cup on the table’s surface and wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans.
     He continued to watch me. His stare was so deep it could be mistaken for analyzing.
     Gosh, he stared hard. Like his eyes were trying to unearth some secret he wanted to know from mine. Since I wasn’t skilled in the art of mind reading, I figured I should make an attempt at formulating some sentences. “So, who is ‘I am Luca?’” I asked, mimicking his original introduction to me. Nice, Ariel, real nice. Making fun of  him will definitely score you points.
     “What do you mean?”
     “I mean, what do you do in your spare time? Besides helping girls save cute, baby deer in the middle of vacant woods, of course.” I laughed. It was getting easier to be more natural with him. I liked that.
     He laughed, too, breaking his analysis. “School and work takes up the majority of my time.”
     Something told me there had to be more to him than that. No one who looked like that graced the world with their beauty in such a mundane way.
     “What about you?” he asked.
     “I guess the same as you. Just work and school.”
     “So why did you find my answer odd?”
     Was he skilled in the art of mind reading? “What do you mean?” I laughed in nervousness.
     He smiled and rested his finger to his delicious lips. “You looked a little underwhelmed by my answer, is all.”
     By God, he got me. “I just thought that … I guess I didn’t know what I thought.” Oy vey.
     He laughed gently.

Victoria H. Smith has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. She puts it to good use writing romance all day. She resides in the Midwest with her Macbook on her lap and a cornfield to her right. She often draws inspiration for her stories from her own life experiences, and the twenty-something characters she writes give her an earful about it.

He took the whole of last summer to bulk-up: finally he is not being called names or being shoved into lockers. He wants to remain on the outside of the circle of constant rumors that surround the so-called popular kids who get all the attention. He would not, however, mind if his long time crush Katie took notice of him.

But it is Barbie who notices Dylan and she offers him a deal he can’t pass up: if he helps her pass algebra, she’ll help him get the girl of his dreams. Dylan agrees, but, as it turns out, nothing is simple when it comes to Barbie. Somehow, she can’t help but draw attention to herself — and to him. Soon Dylan finds himself tossed into the whirlwind of rumors that seem to follow Barbie everywhere. Can he save his reputation and still get the girl of his dreams? Or will Barbie be the one to break through his carefully-built facade?

Holy cow was that an awesome book! Heidi Acosta really knows how to make a reader second guess and ending. Barbie Girl was unique, fun to read, and never ever dull.

Barbie needs a tutor if she wants to pass her math class and graduate on time. When her teacher suggests talking to Dylan, she balks at the idea then takes the advice and asks. Convincing him to tutor her isn't hard. There is one thing he wants and it's something she can get him, but what will happen if they end up with feelings for each other?

I adored Barbie. She didn't have an easy life, but she was strong, caring, and put others before herself. She couldn't care less about what people thought about her and she proved it on a daily basis. Dylan on the other hand is a complete nerd who is in love with the idea of a girl he wishes was his.

Most of you know that I love it when I find books from multiple points of view and Barbie Girl is one of those books. I loved seeing everything play out from both sides. So much background was given on Barbie that you couldn't not like her. Her reputation is crap, but she is an amazing person when you look beyond what others think. I really loved the fact that Barbie and Dylan fought their attraction and refused to accept their feelings for each other through most of the book. That in and of itself made this story different from a lot of books I've read. It was fresh.

Overall, Barbie Girl was a fantastic read that left me rooting for the two love birds. If you want a book where insta-love is absent and the characters refuse to admit their feelings, you've found it and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Heidi Acosta was born on Long Island, New York. Moving around a lot when she was younger, she has lived in New York, Arizona, New York (again), Washington, Georgia, and Florida, in that order. Each place offered her something special, but she will always consider New York her home.

Heidi started writing as soon as she could spell. When she was three, Heidi’s mother gave her a copy of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House in the Big Woods; thus beginning her lifelong love affair with literature.

Writing soon also became a form of therapy for Heidi, when she realized that no matter what was happening in her life, she could find emotional escape while writing. Some of her earliest stories featured her as a princess who explored new worlds with her horse Buttercup. If it sounds romantic, it wasn’t, there was no prince charming in those fairy lands (boys where yucky).

Heidi now resides in Florida with her husband, very active daughter, one hyper Chihuahua, two sweet cats, and one very fat moody cat.

If Graylee Perez thought sharing a body with her twin sister was bad, dealing with a duplicate of herself is two times worse. Gray the second doesn’t seem to get that Lee’s boyfriend, Raj McKenna, is off limits. Then there’s the problem of Adrian Montez. He expects one of the Grays to be his.

Nearly a year later, the council is onto them for past misdeeds; Lee, along with the rest of the coven, has lost control of her powers; and Gray is being stalked by what looks like the Grim Reaper.

If they work together, they may stand a chance of setting things right and making it out alive.

Adrian’s obsession with Gray reminds me of the Goblin King’s fixation on Sarah. At the end

of book one Adrian risks his own life to ensure she doesn’t disappear. In book two his feelings

intensify, but are harshly rejected. Sorry, Adrian, you have no power over Gray.

Bad Romance by Lady Gaga

The confusion spell Gray puts over Adrian requires her to speak gibberish the entire time. She

starts singing “Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah; Roma, roma, ma; Gaga, ooh, la, la,” then accidently busts

into the Bad Romance lyrics.

Love is in the air. Gray heads to Barcelona for the summer, meets the sexy Spaniard Carlo,
